Probiotics and Histamine Intolerance: Which Strains Are Amine-Friendly

Quick answer: Not all probiotics are histamine-friendly. Some lactic-acid bacteria can produce histamine and other biogenic amines, while others — notably Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium infantis, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis — are low-amine or neutral, and a few may help degrade amines. If you’re histamine-sensitive, the strain on the label matters more than the CFU count. A probiotic is gut-balance support, not a treatment for histamine intolerance — DAO-enzyme and mast-cell issues need clinical assessment.

If you react to leftovers, aged cheese, wine or fermented foods with flushing, headaches, hives, congestion or an unsettled gut, you may have looked into histamine intolerance — and then hit a confusing wall: half the internet says “take probiotics,” the other half says probiotics cause histamine problems. Both can be true, because it depends entirely on the strain. Here's the honest version.

What histamine intolerance actually is

Histamine is a normal signalling molecule, and we all break it down — largely via an enzyme called diamine oxidase (DAO) in the gut. Histamine intolerance is the idea that, in some people, the amount of histamine coming in (from food and from gut bacteria) outpaces the body's ability to clear it, producing symptoms. A thorough review in Biomolecules lays out the current state of the science: it's a real but still-debated area, the diagnosis is clinical and imperfect, and the gut — both its DAO capacity and its bacteria — sits at the centre of it.[1] Note the boundary: this is a food-tolerance and wellness topic, not the same thing as a diagnosed mast-cell disease, which needs a specialist.

Why some probiotics make it worse

Here's the part supplement labels never mention: some bacteria make histamine. Certain lactic-acid bacteria carry the enzyme (histidine decarboxylase) that converts the amino acid histidine into histamine, which is exactly why aged and fermented foods can be high in it. A survey in Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease found a wide diversity of human-gut bacteria that both produce and degrade biogenic amines — it cuts both ways.[2] Researchers have even shown that certain Lactobacillus reuteri strains produce histamine as part of how they signal to the immune system.[3] And gut communities skewed toward histamine-secreting microbes have been described in the context of adult asthma.[4]

The takeaway isn't “probiotics are bad.” It's that “probiotic” is a category, and within it some strains add to your histamine load while others don't.

Which probiotic strains are amine-friendly?

Based on the food-microbiology and gut literature, the strains generally regarded as low-histamine or histamine-neutral — and sometimes amine-degrading — cluster around specific Bifidobacterium and plant-associated Lactobacillus species:

This is a general guide, not a lab certificate for every product — amine behaviour can vary strain to strain and even batch to batch. But the principle holds: if you're histamine-sensitive, read for the species and strain, lean toward Bifidobacterium-forward, plant-Lactobacillus formulas, and be cautious with broad “10-strain” blends that don't tell you what's inside.

What a probiotic can and can't do here

Straight talk: a probiotic will not “cure” histamine intolerance, and if your reactions are severe, involve breathing or blood pressure, or you suspect a mast-cell disorder, that's a clinician's job, not a supplement's. A DAO deficiency, medications, and overall gut health all feed the picture.
