Why we have two Ones for autism.
The vagus nerve is the body's longest cranial nerve. It runs from the brainstem into the gut, and it is not just carrying signals down. Around 80% of vagal fibres carry information upward — from gut to brain. The gut is mostly talking, and the brain is mostly listening. In autistic individuals, that signalling line is frequently dysregulated. The research is consistent on this, if not yet fully mechanistic. That dysregulation is where both of our autism-support Ones are aimed. And the reason there are two of them, not one, is that the gut-brain axis does not scale linearly from child to adult.
The Calm One — for adults
The Calm One pairs Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis and Lactobacillus reuteri at 4 Billion CFU each, built on the Universal core. These are the two strains studied along the gut-vagus signalling line for steady focus and calm — not clinical-trial doses, but structure/function support for adults who want to tend that channel daily. In our customer cohort, the median response window is 19 days. 60% report meaningful improvement on a focus-and-calm composite. The other 40% don't, and we say that before anyone buys.
The Gentle One — for kids
The Gentle One uses the same strain pair — same Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis and Lactobacillus reuteri — but at half-dose: 1 Billion CFU each. The Universal core also runs at half-dose (2 Billion CFU each). Two things change beyond the dose: the prebiotic switches from flaxseed to banana, and the format switches from capsule to scoop. Flaxseed is fibrous and well-tolerated by adult guts; banana is mild and ferments more gently, which matters when the gut is still developing. The Gentle One is built for kids 12 and under. 62% of caregivers in our cohort report meaningful improvement. Median: 22 days. The dose reduction is not a cost compromise — developing guts respond to lower bacterial load, and higher isn't better here.
What these aren't
Neither formula is a cure. Neither is a diagnostic tool. Neither replaces ABA, occupational therapy, speech therapy, medication, or any other clinical support that is already part of the care plan. The gut-vagus line is one channel inside a complex system, and tending it daily is worth doing — but it does not conflict with anything else on the plan and it does not stand in for it. If the presentation is complex, multi-system, or clinically supervised, the right next step is not a GoodOnes formula. Flore Inc.'s autism-specialist line is Autism Probiotics — formulas built for more intensive protocols and clinical oversight.
It is also worth reading the torus essay if you haven't — the gut's topology as a body-inside-the-body shapes a lot of how we think about what the microbiome is actually doing, and why the vagal pathway matters as much as it does.
The Calm One for adults. The Gentle One for kids 12 and under. And for anything more involved than daily signalling support, Autism Probiotics is the right next step.
